This new course covers the key principles of sports nutrition and exercise physiology, right up to and including the latest research findings, as well as offering practical experience of the practicalities of working with all kinds of athletes.
There is a wide degree of flexibility in choice of research project - personal interest can really be reflected in this. You can study via full- or part-time mode, which can offer a great chance for gaining professional development credits.
You should have a good Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent from a non-UK university) in human sciences with a strong component of nutrition and/or physiology. Some relevant experience as participant/coach in sports performance is an added advantage. If your first language is not English you should have an IELTS score of at least 6.5, with 6.0 in each element.
Concepts and Principles in Nutrition
The basic concepts and principles of nutritional science with an emphasis on developing a critical understanding of the scientific basis of nutritional requirements, and the factors that influence them.
Nutritional Assessment
The theory and techniques used to assess nutritional status and energy balance. Methods of nutritional assessment at individual, group and population level are studied, with the practical considerations of each method available are examined.
Assessment of Health and Fitness
This module examines the range of techniques that may be utilised to assess health and fitness of individuals, either in the laboratory or field situation, and at all levels from sedentary to high performance.
Current Topics in Exercise Physiology
The physiology of elite sporting performance and exercise, the immediate and long-term physiological responses in extreme environments are studied, and is complemented by a student-led research study will be carried out covering a real-life problem-based topic in an applied area of the field.
Nutrition and Performance
The study of the role of nutrition in promoting and enhancing exercise and sports performance, including the role of dietary nutritional ergogenic supplements, and including a case study in assessing and advising an athlete.
Advanced Performance Nutrition
Examines nutritional demands of specific athletic populations and the contribution of dietary practices and nutritional ergogenic aids to sporting performance, and includes an element of work shadowing a professional practitioner.
Research Methods
Taught component to ensure and enhance scientific rigour, data handling and statistics, for both quantitative and qualitative research.
Research Project
Students will be encouraged to develop and pursue original lines of research that also reflect their own expertise and/or sport interest, but with a high level of scientific rigour.
Opportunity to sit the Certification exam of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (CISSN).
